This summer I had the privilege to visit the beautiful country of Slovenia. Its capital city, Ljubljana, was the European green capital in 2016 thanks to the implementation of sustainable criteria in different areas of the city, and also received awards related to tourism: “The Golden Apple” and the “Tourism For Tomorrow”. Have you ever visited Barcelona? If you got there by plane, did you look through the window to see the landscape before landing? If you did, maybe you realized that there’s a natural space next to the airport (the green area painted in the map below) and it’s surrounded by large cities and Mediterranean Sea. Based on my experience, here you can find some advice to set out on a sustainable travel by yourself:
- Look for information before starting a trip, because it’s important to know about the traditions, the natural and cultural patrimony, and the social situation.
- Respect the environment, the people and their customs.
Traveling taking care of the environment it’s easy if you commit with yourself to impact it as less as possible. If in your everyday life you use fabric bags to go shopping, or you separate waste, or you use transports that generate few or null greenhouse gas emissions, in short, if you are an environmental friendly person, then you are ready to be part of a revolution. Are you a sustainable consumer? Do you think it is easy? In my opinion, it’s not as easy as it seems, but it is not impossible. Besides the commitment to yourself, it is necessary to trust environmental friendly companies. It is known that some businesses sell themselves as “ecofriendly” when they are not at all. They spend money in fake green marketing only to clean their image and to get more customers. However, they are lying. This type of operating is called Greenwashing.
