As you may know, there are plenty of volunteering programs arranged by the European Union all around the continent. I recently had the opportunity to participate in one and I have to say; it’s totally worth it.
When we think about being a volunteer in other countries, we might tend to picture ourselves working hard every day in a developing country or simply being involved in different activities in order to help communities, people, or the environment. Of course that’s the point of taking part in such an adventure, but there is so much more to gain from doing volunteer work abroad. You aren’t only being helpful to others; you also develop new skills, you get to know yourself better, and you get stronger in many ways. It’s a win-win situation.
Besides, since you are in a different country and therefore in a completely diverse atmosphere, it’s a way of getting out of your comfort zone and traveling in a different style. Perhaps with fewer commodities and less time to visit the country, but in a way that will make you feel more integrated and useful.
You can either take part in a working camp which normally lasts between 3 to 4 weeks with a group of 5 to 24 members and suitable for all ages, or you can participate in an EVS which can last up to a year and it’s normally with smaller groups, but you must be between 17 and 30 years old.
From my experience, I have met people from many different countries which whom I have been able to share my experiences, food, thoughts, traditions and also get to know about theirs. In addition, if you become good friends with someone, you can visit them in the future and have accommodation and guide!
If you are a young person I truly recommend you to do an EVS because you will have a lot of fun but also you will learn many important abilities and lessons for you life. And it doesn’t matter how old you are, as long as you have the drive to travel and get involved in new experiences, you should try a work camp.
Why in Catalonia?
Catalonia is a region with a beautiful coast, breath-taking landscapes formed by mountains and rivers, and also known by its interesting cities and villages, friendly people, and delicious gastronomy.
For example, you can apply for a project in rural areas and help in farms and hostels or with families teaching and taking care of the kids… here you can find many options with different people who seek other people to assist them.
On the other hand, there are programs from different organizations working with children and teenagers in schools, social associations, with elderly people, fighting against racism, helping the environment… If you are interested in this kind of volunteering check out: FindEVS , AsociacionMundus , GoAbroad.
